Here I captured a young deer pausing among moss-covered stone steps within the wooded grounds of a Shinto shrine in Nara. Soft daylight filters through the trees, illuminating weathered stone and vibrant green moss as the deer emerges from between the steps, alert yet calm.

In Nara, deer roam freely through sacred spaces, moving effortlessly between forest paths and centuries-old shrine architecture. They'll also often approach you looking for snacks.
